A godly man was once told this by God:
3 Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me.
God had questions for this man, and similarly God has questions for us today. I'm going to ask a few now.
Genesis 3:9 ...Where art thou?
God was asking Adam where he was because he was hiding from Him. He was hiding because he knew he had sinned, and had done wrong and wasn't right before God. But instead of coming before God sorry, Adam was hiding, maybe hoping that God wouldn't come looking for him.
God asks us the same question, and for us what really matters is where are we spiritually. If we haven't come to Him sorry for our sins, then where we are is far from Him. Maybe we are hiding like Adam. Hiding in our studies, or hiding in our music, or hiding in our pleasures. Hoping that this will all go away. But it wont. There is only one way for our guilt to be removed, and that is through Christ.
Genesis 4:10 And he said, What hast thou done?
God asked this of Cain. He knew what he had done, but asked it anyway. Cain had sinned and murdered innocent blood. He was guilty of murder, and a whole host of other sins that went with this murder. The question asked allowed Cain to see what he had done. God asks us the same question, What have we done? What sins have we committed? What lies have we told? What unjustified hate has been in our hearts? What lust has been in our flesh? What pride in our life? What have we done? See your sin, and see your need of forgiveness for this sin. There is no other way to be right with God unless we see that we need His forgiveness.
James 4:14 ...For what is your life?... God here uses a question to remind us that our lives are short, so short. Some people I grew up with in Sunday school are long dead. Life is so short, you aren't guaranteed a long one. And even if you do get 70 or 80 years, it's still short. Eternity on the other hand, thats long! It lasts for forever! Why live for some short term pleasures, and eternal pain, it just doesn't make sense. Instead, live for eternal joy even if it means short term hardship and mistreatment.
Mark 8: 29 ...But whom say ye that I am?... Christ was asking the disciples who they believed He was. Some people were saying that He was John the baptist, others Elijah, and others a prophet. But the disciples believed that He was the Christ, the Messiah, the anointed one. Our view of Christ matters so much. If we don't believe that He is God, then we don't believe that He could die for our sins. We don't believe that He is now interceding for us. We have no hope. But we know that He is God, and as a result, He could take that infinite punishment that all who trust on Him deserve. Because He was God He was able to live a life of perfect obedience, and was able to raise Himself from the dead so that we could be assured that His sacrifice had been accepted.
Two final questions:
Matthew 16:26 For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
Think about these questions. They are super important. What do you gain if you were to gain everything this world has, which no man has ever done, but then lose your own soul. What would be the point. And secondly when you stand before God, what can you try to offer God for your soul. Everything is His anyway, so you wont be able to trade anything for your souls forgiveness. Instead see that only Christs finished work can be given in exchange for your soul, and the gain that you get when you come to Him is greater than any profit this world can ever offer.
